Alaska

Words I am having problems pronouncing

Alutiiq (the over all name of Indians living on Kodiak, and parts of the Aleutians.)
Note: Alutiiq used to be called the Aleut.

Akhiok, a name of a village in south Kodiak. There are only forty people living there. The only way to get there is to fly in, or by fishing boat. The people call in orders from Safeway, and some sort of bush pilot or boat brings it down. Kim told me once that she sold a six pack of beer for 50 bucks because the party that wanted it ran out.

Other things I have noticed:

Salmon fishing is open all year. Can you believe that? And the limit is three a day! Fucking unbelievable.

When venturing anywhere out of town, one must be armed with a weapon of some sorts, preferably a shotgun with slugs. This is because of brown bears. I recently had thanksgiving with some of Kim’s friends, and the 4 year old daughter was showing me pictures of camp, where they went out and picked berries. There in the pictures was a 15 year old consular holding a shot gun smiling with a group of four year olds.

Chicks with guns man, chicks with guns.

Kodiak, Grizzly, and Brown Bears are all the same, only difference being that Kodiak live on Kodiak, Brown bears are costal, and Grizzly’s live inland.

Reindeer and Caribou are the same, only I don’t know what the Difference is…

Kodiak Island is the second largest island in the United States; only second the big island of Hawaii.
