The siege of Masada was one of the final events in the first Jewish Roman War, occurring from 73 to 74 AD on a large hilltop in current-day Israel. According to Josephus the long siege by the troops of the Empire led to the mass suicide of the Sicarii rebels and resident Jewish families of the Masada fortress. Masada has become a controversial event in Jewish history, with some regarding it as a place of reverence, commemorating fallen ancestors and their heroic struggle against oppression, and others regarding it as a warning against extremism and the refusal to compromise. But what is more interesting is the fact that the Romans could have just laid a real siege, meaning they could have just cut off the supply lines and starved them out, but instead they built a causeway, piling up all the earth they could find around the cliff until they built a land bridge in-which they could attack the Jewish settlement. Sometimes I wonder why they did that? I imagine Grant in Vicksburg thinking this way, how would history be different? This is happening
